Laatste Ronde plot

When childhood friends André, Bart and David, all well into their 50s, start working in an old cafe bought up by friend Joost in Belgium, they are no longer immortal. They still effortlessly alternate heavy seriousness with weak old talk, but they cannot escape the fact that they are getting older. Loyalty, fate and humor as a life buoy prove much needed to face the next phase in their lives.

Sequel to Nicole van Kilsdonk's Ventoux (2015) in which old friends and people over sixty David [Wim Opbrouck], André [Wilfred de Jong] and Bart [Reinout Bussemaker] visit Joost [Leopold Witte], who has bought a Flemish farm with his savings that he wants to convert into a bistro. André has invested money in the project and would like to contribute, so when David announces that he wants to stay for the time being, the friends join forces to renovate the farm. David has invited Bart's daughter Anna [Rosa Kreulen], who hopes to prepare for her cello exam - not really useful during a renovation. Formulaic ensemble film with the familiar bickering and other predictable stuff and moody piano or string motifs that are intended to guide your emotions, but actually limit them. Has a handful of nice moments, mainly thanks to Opbrouck's engaging performance, but don't expect any surprises.

Surprises? Perhaps not. Stories like this have been told many times and are in themselves not very surprising. Still, I was carried away by its sincerity. And if I could say one significant surprise, it was that I enjoyed this film a lot more than its predecessor: it just fell a bit dead for me at the conclusion. In Ventoux (2015) we actually lived towards nothing for the entire film, in my experience. So the fact that Last Round managed to hit me like that was a surprise to me.
