La Prisonnière plot

Stanislas Hassler (Laurent Terzieff) owns an art gallery showing the complete development of modern art. Gilbert Moreau (Bernard Fresson) is one of the artists whose work is also there. His wife, Josée (Elisabeth Wiener) is intrigued by Stanislas, who uses his spare time in an apartment to photograph his artistic, bizarre taste. But those photos do show a twisted character. Josée faces the difficult choice of risking her adult relationship with Gilbert for a man with a hidden personality.

The film reminds me of Peeping Tom (1960) which also focuses on voyeurism vs. love. It is very clear that La Prisonnière was made in the swingin' sixties, as evidenced by the use of bright psychedelic colours and shapes as equivalents of hallucinogenic experiences (see also e.g. A Space Odissey 2001, made in the same year, also contains such a trip), exploring relationships, the search for (sexual) identity ....

While the aesthetics may seem - inevitably but not annoyingly - dated, the film's theme is more relevant than ever in the current digital age. Pornography has never been so widely available and within reach (no pun intended) than it is today, stripped of any kind of intimacy.

With his last film, HG Clouzot proved that he has his finger on the social pulse, and it is a worthy conclusion to his oeuvre.

Nice film about a married woman who meets an art dealer who takes her picture. Clearly a product of its time. Partly because of the many works of art that pass by, this is a visually attractive film. The relationships between the characters are well-established, but it is all a bit long-winded (especially the photo shoots).

Content-wise I didn't find this thing interesting. Too bad, visually cool with that atmosphere of the 60s and the bright colors. The film comes from that period but also manages to portray that quite well and is recognizable for viewers in 2025. No idea what else it was, maybe it wasn't the moment to watch but the film just dragged and dragged from second 1. 1.0*.
