La Hija del Puma plot
Aschlop, a 17-year-old girl from Guatemala, witnesses the massacre of 253 inhabitants of the Mayan village where she lives. Her brother Mateo is arrested and taken away by the military police. Together with her family and thousands of other Indians, she flees through the rainforest, over the Mexican border to a refugee camp. According to Native American lore, the puma is Aschlop's guardian spirit, while Mateo's is the owl. These two animals never let each other down. The fate of brother and sister is determined by it. During her flight, Aschlop has the feeling that her brother is still alive. When Mateo's wife gives birth to a son, Aschlop decides to look for news about her brother and embarks on the long and perilous journey back to Guatemala. The owl and the puma will lead Aschlop on her quest through a land slowly strangled by terror and oppression.
