La Donna del Fiume plot
When farmer's daughter Nives (Sophia Loren) is abandoned by the smuggler Gino Lodi, she betrays him to the police. Police inspector Enzo Cinti (Gérard Oury) who loves Nives tracks her down when he learns that Gino has escaped from prison and is out for revenge. He eventually finds her at the Po, where she works as a reed-cutter to feed herself and her son. She refuses his offer to protect her.
