La Dernière Lettre plot
A Jewish Russian named Anna Semyonovna is a doctor in a small village in Ukraine. The last letter she writes in 1941 is to her son, a physicist who lives far from the front, in an institute of Russian science. She writes the letter a few days before she is murdered by the Germans. Just like all the other Jews in her village. She summarizes her life in this letter; her relationship with her son, her love for him, her life as a student in Paris, her failed marriage. She describes the reaction of her neighbors to the arrival of the Germans and the reaction of the Jews to their arrival. She talks about the cruelty and horror of the occupation and how some Jews revolt against it. Sometimes they receive help from an unexpected source, but often people ignored them. She realizes more and more that she is a Jewess first and foremost…
