L'Isola plot
The story is set on a remote island off the coast of Sicily that looks like a sunny holiday resort, but where life for the residents is hard and meager. Central to the family story are brother and sister Turi (14) and Teresa (10). The frail Turi is fully involved in supporting the family, but the heavy fishing work is not easy for him. Moreover, his life is not made any easier by a conflict with Leonardo, a boy his age who is strong and seems born for the fishing life. The big challenge is the so-called mattanza, the ritual fishing for tuna. A raw and not harmless spectacle, in which young fishermen have to prove that they are a man and ready for the trade. Teresa would also like to become a fisherman and go out to sea with the men, but life on this island is not like that. She has to go to work in a bar in the harbor.
