Kinema no Tenchi plot
"A happy movie about movies. What better entertainment?"
At the beginning of the 1930s, when the spoken films replaced the silent films, director Ogura is famous for making easily digestible films. His young assistant Kenjiro has a hard time with this, because he would rather make films with more depth and a message. Ogura discovers the beautiful Koharu and convinces her to play a part in his new movie. After an unaccustomed debut, she manages to conquer a place in the studio and regularly plays a supporting role in a film. One day, Kenjiro is falsely accused of communist thinking and is jailed. In prison he learns from his cellmates what film means for the population in this difficult time. After his release, he is determined to make a movie for the people with Koharu in her first lead role.
