Ken Park plot

"Who are you?"

Ken Park is a story about a pair of California skateboarders, their lives and relationships with and without their parents. A secret life among the youth of the small town of Visalia, in central California, is exposed, where the youngsters do things that their parents don't even dare to think they know what it is, let alone do.

Movie marathon: Alain Resnais, Mark Chapman, giallo, B-movie horror, splatter galore, Jean Renoir and finally Ken Park... we must be a bit far gone by now and we advise everyone under 20 to see this film, because watch out if she or it gets you... adulthood.

Grab a skateboard, listen to some punk, hip-hop, The Shaggs for all I care, the nihilism isn't in what you guys do, it's in what the adults have made of life.

masterpiece!

I was always curious about Ken Park; I found Gummo by Harmony Korine interesting in a certain perverse way, and I had come across Ken Park on lists before. Especially lists about the most intense, most filthy films, that sort of thing. But that turned out to be okay. In Ken Park we follow a group of adolescents growing up from (generally) rather dysfunctional families, and the things they do in their privacy. And actually that was quite worth it - it's not all pretty what we see, but it does come across very real with a great cast. I felt good for them, although I'm glad I (and most of my friends) didn't grow up in such a dysfunctional gang. It's not as bizarre as Gummo, but there's still a lot of misery passing by: especially incest and attempted domestic violence, and of course the suicide of Ken Park, and in a rather unAmerican way it gets naked shown quite explicitly. Which has apparently led to the film still being banned in many places. I think the fuss about the film is quite exaggerated, there are quite disturbing characters in it but much more extreme than a masturbating guy, an explicit threesome, and some not too explicit sex and violence scenes that are often seen in many films. be shown more explicitly, it will not. For the 90 minutes it lasted, this was quite interesting.

A coming-of-age story of a sexually aroused teenager who is unable to cope with his hormones. It's not really hard for him either. The film starts with a completely different slant that is quite intense. Then the characters are introduced with a voice-over. All some types, each with their own idiosyncrasies.

I did miss some coherence between the plot and the characters. Film that tries to provoke with some sex scenes and violence that has gotten out of hand. The world of young people is not very encouraging, with marginality and a moralistic undertone coming to the fore. Skating and smoking seems to be an escape from reality, but they also perpetuate their situation. A little casual sex doesn't change that much.

All in all an OK film with quite interesting characters, but I expected more in terms of story development.
