1982 In the Californian town of Kern. The Kniffen and McCuan families are good friends. The Kniffens have two sons, the McCuans two daughters. The stepmother of Mrs. McCuan is mentally disturbed. She gets it into her head that her granddaughters are being sexually abused by their parents. When they ask their friends to testify in their favor, the girls (under pressure from the stepmother) claim that they too have abused them. Child Protective Services and the local DA are overzealous on the case. The police raid Brenda and Scott Kniffen. They both immediately go behind bars and their sons are taken care of by the Child Protective Services. Through manipulation and intimidation by both the DA and Child Protection, both boys also make accusations against their parents. They are convicted without a fair trial. Their case leads to an unprecedented witch hunt for parents accused of child abuse and abuse. The film is based on true events.
