"The world refused to help her special child... but she never gave up hope."

Mississippi, 1940s. Jewel Hillard is a happily married housewife with four children and a fifth on the way. After a difficult delivery, the newborn Brenda turns out to have Down syndrome. However, Jewel refuses to place her in an institution, increasing tensions in the family.
