The story of a couple who gradually become estranged from each other and whose memories are told by their wife Françoise. First, the two young people meet at the school desks of the Faculty. They get to know each other through mutual friends. They fall in love and start a relationship. Jean-Marc passes his exams. He will soon be a lawyer. Françoise is expecting a baby. They decide to get married. In the beginning, the young lawyer is passionate about his profession and does not hesitate to accept a post in the countryside. However, Françoise is much less enthusiastic about moving. She is bored and also fears financial problems. When they return to Paris, Jean-Marc is no longer really happy. Françoise goes to work in the capital as a servant and meets Patricia, a lawyer who loves the free life. Her husband happens to end up in her father's office, but it doesn't take long before he starts to get annoyed by the latter and resigns. Françoise advances in her career at an advertising agency and Jean-Marc becomes jealous. Gradually, the conjugal life of Jean-Marc and Françoise is undermined by their contradictions.
