And Gainsbourg makes a beautiful, brutal seventies film of great quality.

It is somewhat reminiscent of Les Valseuses, Betty Blue and even Spetters by Paul Verhoeven.

This is a typical, wonderfully atmospheric French 70s film and the kind of film that makes me nostalgic whenever I see one of those recent French films that are a bit too neat (like Il YA Longtemps Que Je T'Aime).

Jane Birkin makes this film by acting top. Furthermore, this is a kind of road trip in the 70's, in which Dallesandro plays nothing more than an oppressor who, based on his own preference, uses Birkin in such a way that she starts to believe him and becomes dependent on him. Birkin's last remark hits the nail on the head and confronts Dalessandro with his true nature. Groundbreaking for the 70's, but probably still an intense event for many in this day and age. Also the striptease in the warehouse... a shocking level, but in the 70's there were more shocking things regarding sexuality, under the guise of freedom/liberation. Doesn't take away from the fact that this is a film with the impact that was intended at the time. 2.5* extra 0.5* for Birkin's acting.

Very mediocre especially because of the acting, it seems like they are reading their texts. Very flat and without much emotion. A lot of nudity but that is no longer shocking these days (although that is less visible than nowadays, that is also true). Visually sometimes nice shots and a single moment was funny but I was quite bored. 1.5*.
