J'Entends Plus la Guitare plot
J'entends plus la guitare is, loosely and in an idiosyncratic way, based on an autobiographical fact. In his film, Garrel incorporates memories of the time he had a relationship with Nico, the legendary female band member of the equally legendary Velvet Underground. Nico's background does not play a role in the film. The woman in the film is called Marianne (Johanna ter Steege) and is not a musician and the music of the film has no affinity with the Velvet Underground idiom. Gérard (Garrel's alter ego) has found happiness with Marianne, the kind of love that gives his life meaning. But in Garrel's view, happiness mainly means that you have to live with the fear of losing happiness. The film is literally and metaphorically about the space that exists between characters, in particular between a man and a woman.
