In the Palace of the King plot

King Philip II of Spain is jealous of his powerful and popular brother, Don John. So he sends him to fight the Moors, hoping he won't return. John leaves behind Dolores Mendoza, the woman he loves. Dolores' father, General Mendoza, believes John is playing with his daughter's feelings and disapproves of a marriage, but John returns victorious and insists. Meanwhile, Princess Eboli, Philip's favorite, is busy forging a plot.
