Garnet Montrose returns to West Virginia after sustaining a horrific facial injury during his involvement in the fighting at Guadalcanal. From his farm, he yearns for his former high school sweetheart, Georgia. Garnet lives a secluded life due to his scars and injuries. He takes a wandering young man named Potter under his wing to deliver letters to Georgia. Garnet becomes more reserved with Potter, until he suspects him of more than just delivering letters. Potter becomes the focus of attention for both Garnet and Georgia.
