Born and raised as a city woman, Mary Elizabeth knows she has to adapt as she and her husband move to the Blue Ridge Mountains, where tempers run high and pastor William Thompson is responsible for keeping the peace. Thompson himself becomes the subject of wrath when he takes a local atheist's child out on a picnic. But the biggest challenge for William and Mary comes when the entire community is hit by a dangerous epidemic.
