Charlotte Bruckner receives a warm welcome when she returns in 1920 to her father Captain Bruckner and her fiancé Jack Sanford in Eastern Samoa, a distant outpost controlled by the United States Navy. At her welcome party, Charlotte first sees Matangi, who is sworn in as chief executive a few days later on Alava after the death of his father. Charlotte will then stay on the island for a few more weeks. Noticing the attraction between his daughter and Matangi, her father warns her. But once alone with the beautiful Matangi, she ignores all advice and that will have major consequences for her and her lover.
