Hungry Hearts plot

The Levins flee Europe and find refuge in New York City, where everyone in the family has to work. Sara finds a janitor job and meets David, the nephew of their landlord Rosenblatt. David falls in love with Sara and teaches her to read and write. He looks forward to the day when he can open a law firm, be free of his uncle, and marry the girl. The uncle intervenes and separates the lovers, then mercilessly raises the Levins' rent.
