Nella Last is a lonely, depressed woman in a troubled marriage. The only bright spot in her life is her two sons. However, her youngest son Cliff moves to Chester for the army and has to leave her. Nella is about to have a nervous breakdown, but Cliff tries to encourage his mother to keep a journal. To escape another depression, Nella also joins the local volunteer service, despite her husband's opposition.
