Hotel plot

Young Irene gets a job as a receptionist at the Hotel Waldhaus, located deep in the dark Alpine forests. She is as neat as the hotel itself and seems unimpressed by her humorless employers' obsession with order, punctuality and tidiness. Also, the endless deserted concrete hallways with power-saving light switches that most people would shy away from seem to attract her rather than instill fear in her. She learns that her predecessor has mysteriously disappeared, but inquiries only yield hostile stares and evasive answers.

I also saw this because I was very pleased with the trailer and I was ready for something Lynchian again. But that is not so much an issue here. It is more of a kind of psychological thriller that does not always turn out particularly well. However, the mystery itself was nicely put together and there were still some goosebumps-inducing moments, for example: those hallucination scenes, including the one with the camera rushing towards Irene's head and of course the ending, brrr.

Otherwise well played and I am now starting to understand that Austrians have their own way of filming. Just the silence seems to be important to them.

3.5*

It feels like an attempt to create a Blair Witch in a Lynch setting. The atmosphere is gloomy and oppressive, thanks to the stylistic environment and the cool characters. The main character herself is not entirely normal, with her prudish mouth and stiff appearance (very pleasant to look at). Add to that silences, long shots and a slow pace. The mysterious, dark corridors and forests complete it.

But let's face it, nothing happens. In that respect, the film relies entirely on the assumption and 'threat', in a quiet way. Not being a horror fan, I found myself looking away from the screen every now and then when I was expecting something. The mysterious predominates. So much in fact that nothing is actually explained at all, except for a hint here and there that can be interpreted in several ways. The story drags on and ultimately goes nowhere.

In terms of cinematography and atmosphere it is certainly satisfactory, but as a whole it is a bummer.

A film that mainly relies on atmosphere and vagueness. Nowhere does it get scary or does much actually happen. The lead actress is okay to watch because otherwise it would have become more boring. I had the feeling that the film just doesn't know where it wants to go. Missed opportunity and somewhat of a waste of my time.
