Also thought it was a lesser Sono.

Although it is still entertaining, it is all too exaggerated and ridiculous, but without the real black-comic edge that I like so much from Sono. Despite the occasionally nice characters and the regular choice for classical music that we know from Sono, I have the feeling that he overplays his hand here. Himizu has a much more serious tone but misses the curve here and there. I would have liked something more darkly comical and/or more lurid.

Very tight 3*

Nice coming of age against the backdrop of the Fukushima disaster. For me, Sion Sono is somewhat unknown territory, but I liked this one quite a bit. Not that the plot course and the intention is always clear, but a number of scenes and developments were worthwhile.

For example, the character Yuichi is quite nicely developed. He literally lives on the fringes of society, renting out boats for fishermen and tourists. His home is not really a home with an abusive father and an absent mother. At school, he is a bit lost, but catches Keiko's attention. But it often comes from one side due to Yuichi having some internal unspoken traumas.

The film is serene, but at times also intense, typical Sono it turns out? Otherwise great soundtrack and acting. Nice!

Sion Sono already has some cool films to his credit and this one certainly belongs in that list. Wonderful, Japanese-style drama film, with quite a dystopian atmosphere and black humour. Also strong cast and story, didn't bore me for a second with this. Thick 8/10.
