Hi no Hate plot

Luzon, 1944, the Japanese army is about to collapse and many soldiers desert. Lieutenant Uji heads into the jungle with one of his section leaders, Corporal Takagi, to arrest and execute Hanada. This medical officer has deserted and gone deep into the jungle with Chie, a daughter of a local soldier. Uji is secretly pleased with the trip, which he sees as an escape from utter destruction. He is actually jealous of Hanada, his best friend, but desertion is impossible for him as long as he is stuck with Takagi, who still follows his orders fanatically.
