Het Verloren Paradijs plot

The construction of a motorway is planned in a fictitious Flemish village. Mayor Benjamin Rolus is a loner who lives secluded in his castle and wants to avoid the highway running through his domain. He suggests a route along the village center, which would force a number of elderly residents to move. The opposition to the mayor is represented by a merchant from the village, Jan Boel. He uses a woman, the vulgar red-haired vamp Pascale who caused a rift between the two men in their youth, to make the lord of the castle change his mind.

The film is visually and directorially beautiful, though the somewhat farcical script and André (who, just like in Slachtvee, fails to convincingly portray a Belgian) break the film down a bit. 3.5*

Village play with acting performances to match. The ending is very weak, although it wasn't as predictable as I had expected. It was nice to see the nostalgic 70s footage, though, and also very nice to see the young Willeke van Ammelrooy. Her scenes lift the film to a slightly higher level. Even though, naturally, just like in all her 70s films, she goes swimming naked in a pond again. Incidentally, besides Quido's review (which admittedly is no longer online), I know another good reason to buy the original DVD: the subtitles! You really do need them if you want to understand what is being said.

Despite the presence of Willeke Van Ammelrooy, this is the worst film I have ever seen & I’ve seen quite a few! Nevertheless, there are so-called "film connoisseurs" here who think this is a good film! I am 68 and have the reputation of a film connoisseur and have been sitting here since this film panel started; however, I cannot stand up to "arrogant" Dutch people with their outspoken opinions! Sorry...[
