"What good are medals on tortured breasts?"
Thomas' Tom' Holmes is a wounded World War I hero whose long hospital stay has turned him into a morphine junkie. He roams from town to town looking for work during the American Depression, only to be rejected. Finally, Tom comes into contact with the highly successful businessman Max Brinker, who has invented a revolutionary washing machine. Tom becomes Brinker's business partner and meets the attractive Ruth Loring, whom he marries. Tom tries to curb a strike organized by communist workers.
