Her Double Life plot
Mary Doone is a poor British girl who runs away from her adoptive family because her father made advances toward her. She lives in a parish house and, when the First World War breaks out, becomes a nurse with the Red Cross. At the front, she meets war correspondent Lloyd Stanley. Stanley tries to have his way with her, but she is rescued when the hospital tent is bombed. To escape Stanley, she assumes the clothes and identity of a deceased girl, Ethel Wardley. Ethel was on her way to live with Lady Clifford, an aunt she had never met. So that's where Mary goes.
