Episodic narration of the adventures of Nick Adams, based on Ernest Hemingway's many autobiographical stories. Nick leaves his father and sets out for adventures. First, he hangs out with a wandering old boxer (Newman) and his friend. Then Nick tries to become a writer, but nobody wants to hire him because he has no experience. Nick becomes an ambulance driver in World War I, where he befriends John (Wallach) and falls in love with a sister.
