Joe 'Tom' Yateley has served a prison sentence and in an attempt to put his past behind him decides to work for the gravel transport company Hawlett Trucking. It's a tough company where it's all about speed; if you do too few rides in a day, you will be fired. Foreman C. 'Red' Redman is the most experienced trucker, but also has a short fuse. Red gets eighteen rides a day. Tom quickly befriends Lucy, Hawlett Trucking's blond secretary, and his Italian colleague Gino Rossi, who wants to marry Lucy. Red's stage record intrigues Tom and he wants to break it. Gino discourages him, but helps Tom when he wants to break this record. Tom gets into trouble when Red and other drivers unite against him. Just when Tom has had enough of the harassment and decides to pack his bags, Lucy learns that Gino had a terrible car accident and tells him about the corruption at Hawlett Trucking.
