Hanyut plot
Kaspar Almayer is a Dutch merchant struggling to survive in colonial Malaysia towards the end of the 19th century. He sends his ten-year-old daughter Nina to Singapore to be trained as a Westerner. This against the wishes of Kaspar's Malaysian wife Mem. When Nina returns ten years later as a beautiful young woman, she finds that her father's company is in trouble because of her father's obsession with finding gold in the mountains.
