Mistumasa Karasawa, a wealthy banker from Hagi, has three beautiful daughters: Reiko, Noriko, Keiko. Noriko was engaged to an employee of her father's bank: Fujisawa. Shortly before their wedding, he disappears only to reappear three years later, accompanied by his sister Tomoko. Karasawa may still be mad at him, but Noriko seems to take him back into her heart after the depression. They eventually get married shortly after. Now Robert, a Japanese American, comes to stay with his uncle to study in Japan. Fujisawa's sister is also staying at Karasawa's house when Robert and Noriko accidentally find three letters addressed to his sister in Fujisawa's room. They tell the story of his wife's illness and death. But it is his sister who dies shortly after and an investigation follows.
