Généalogies d'un Crime plot
"Is she the murderer, the victim, or both?"
A child psychologist from the turn of the century discovered homicidal tendencies in her five-year-old nephew. While she was studying him, awaiting an actual murder, he killed her. So much for the facts. René (Melvil Poupaud) is the young indicted cousin who is defended by the female lawyer Solange (Cathérine Deneuve). Solange wants to shed light on the subtle relationships that have existed for a long time between victim (aunt) and perpetrator (cousin). At first it seems as if the aunt wanted not only to explain her cousin's compulsive tendencies, but also to test a new theory. And the boy apparently wanted not only to punish his aunt for her obscene curiosity, but also accepted her irresistible "invitation" to commit murder. However, during Solange's investigation, the case takes a surprising turn. The boy gradually becomes more convinced that his lawyer and his deceased aunt are one and the same person. Solange begins to see her client as the reincarnation of her own son who was killed in a traffic accident. After the boy's acquittal, Solange falls in love with him and moves in with him. This is how the vicious circle seems to start again...
