"Can love vanish without a trace?"
Marie Drillon is an attractive, intelligent and independent middle-aged woman. She teaches English literature at the University of Paris and has been happily married to Jean Drillon for 25 years. During their holiday in the south of France, Jean goes swimming in the sea. When he is still not back after a long time, Marie becomes worried. What happened? Did Jean drown? Did he commit suicide? Did he abandon Marie for someone else? This traumatic experience causes Marie to be completely devastated psychologically. Back at home, Marie pretends that nothing happened and Jean is still with her.

All nice and above all solid, but really nothing remarkable. Actually, only that scene where her husband disappears is very strong. That strong sound of the waves, with the helpless Rampling looking over it. Other than that, the film just floats around a bit, without becoming really gripping or terribly interesting. In short, mostly decent, but I've seen better films about grieving, such as Trois Couleurs: Bleu.

Impressive tour-de-force by Charlotte Rampling. The slow tempo fits perfectly with the psychological process that the main character undergoes, but therein lies the problem: the film is extremely slow.
Not bad, but François Ozon has made better films.

Ozone's best. The film is typical in its style, often with a somewhat observant camera, fine tempo, certain atmosphere, certain themes, but this time also a film that slides under the skin, and that can mainly be attributed to Rampling. You have to go along with the fact that she reacts the way she does, but once you have overcome that (quite quickly) it is fun. At 55 she still looks fantastic (especially in that black prom dress and lipstick) but it's her facial expression, her eyes, her whole interpretation. Natural, believable and emotionally compelling. Then it's nice that she gets good counterplay from Cremer, who also have a fantastic chemistry together. Then Ozon continues what he always does. His films are never very special but always very nice to watch. He made mistakes, of course. Especially so right after the disappearance, in my opinion, there is too big a gap towards her normal life again in Paris. But absolutely 4.0*.
