Fort McCoy plot
Summer 1944. Frank Stirn moves with his family to work as a barber for the United States Army at Fort McCoy POW camp in Wisconsin. Embittered at not being able to fight, he must take a stand when a Nazi SS officer threatens his wife. Her Catholic sister falls in love with a Jewish soldier, who is haunted by his experiences at the Battle of Monte Cassino and the death of his best friend. Frank's daughter befriends a young German prisoner during this magical summer. All this while the war is still taking its toll on thousands of miles of rural America.
