For Whom the Bell Tolls plot

The Spanish Civil War, 1937. American Robert Jordan is ordered to blow up a bridge used by the enemy to supply weapons. Jordan needs the help of the guerrillas to do this, but their leader Pablo refuses any cooperation. Pablo is scared and weak and is no longer respected. Today it is his wife Pilar who calls the shots. Moreover, Pilar finds Robert Jordan sympathetic. But Jordan falls in love with the peasant girl Maria, who also fights on the side of the guerrillas.
