Festival of Lights plot

Reshma is a rebellious young girl living in Queens, New York. Her only memory of a happy family was at a Diwali festival in a village in Guyana. She was then 4 years old. Almost immediately after the Diwali celebration, Reshma and her mother Meena migrated to Queens. Her father stayed behind because he is not allowed in due to immigration problems. Meena later marries an older man and Reshma grows up to be a rebellious teenager. She is unable to determine her own identity and gets lost in the underworld.
