Germany, 1970s: Stephanie lives with her mother and father in a remote, run-down house. There is hardly any contact with the outside world. The life of the young, bright girl is characterized by the symbiotic relationship with her mentally unstable mother Sybille, who has never really left her own childhood behind. Sybille is in bed most of the day, and when she's not in bed, she wears a duster. Father Reinhardt seems to care about nothing but three meals a day.
