Fantasy in Fiction plot

Rob, a single window dresser, lives in a wide polder landscape. His only human contact is with a psychotic and introverted boy, Evert, who helps him make his shop window material. Rob receives a message that Van Rijn, an old aristocrat with whom he played chess as a boy, has died and has left him the game of chess as a memory. Van Rijn's foster daughter, with whom Rob has been in love but whom he has not seen in all these years, calls him and says that she is coming to visit him. But what is the real reason for her visit?
