Eye on the Sparrow plot
Ethel Lee grows up in Mississippi; she's blind. At the age of eleven she attends a boarding school for blind children. There she learns to live with her handicap; but miraculously an operation on her eyes succeeds and Ethel can see for the first time in her life. Her happiness is short-lived, however; for the stare in her eyes is slowly returning. Then she is introduced to James Lee; also a visually impaired person; and he learns to love her. They marry against the will of the people around them. After a while they find out that they cannot have children of their own. Ethel and James decide to adopt; but the state is very unsympathetic to their wishes. Despite this, Ethel and James continue to fight for their rights and become the first blind couple to legally adopt children.
