A sultry film about the traumatic relationship between an adulterous doctor and his teenage daughters in the deep south of America. Although an incestuous situation arises, the film stays on the safe side. Not very shocking at all. I liked the poetic ending.

What a beautiful gem this is. I am a big fan of South America anyway. The film comes in right away when Eve catches her father with as her sister says that cow? This beautiful film recently received a 4K transfer. Not a real 4k transfer but edited to almost 4k so to speak. But the transfer is a picture anyway. Sound is also well taken care of. The big star in this film is really Eve played by Jurnee Smollet who, with her child role, seems a bit older like Shirley Temple played. An Oscar worthy role. I also found her mischievous traits very funny and the whole thing felt natural to me. In fact, nothing was exaggerated. Good looking. I had to watch the film with English Subs, but that was no problem for me in this film. Also learned some new words. Tapestry, barren, slugger or cohorts, although the latter word is also Dutch. I also found the Vodoo part very nicely portrayed. Especially with her vodoo doll and her needles. With her age you also have to decide what is fiction and real. The fact that the playfulness could also become reality in it suddenly frightened her. I'm really fascinated by her role, although others certainly don't play badly either. The poetic forms in the family are also beautifully expressed. Beautiful drama!

The summer I killed my father, I was ten years old

With these heavy words, this family tragedy begins with an adulterous father as the common thread. Leaves a very strong impression. Much rests on the perception of the children Eve and Cisely towards their father and they unwittingly influence fate, or rather fate, through their actions. It's not easy to make children come out in such heavy dramas, but it works wonderfully well here, especially with Jurnie Smollett in the role of Eve, who portrays the complex relationship with her parents with conviction.

Some scenes and dialogues also made quite an impression. For example, the aunt, Mozelle, literally walks into her memories when she tells Eve how her first husband was killed by her lover. When that shot rang out, I literally shot out of my seat. That was a gem of a scene. The last fifteen minutes are also almost unforgettable. A good film, but it sputters a few times in the beginning and takes just a little too much time to put all the game pieces in place. The length is the weak point of the film, but this was otherwise well acted!
