Senseless absurdity that reaches its climax in an unimaginably pointless run with the judiciary.

After a strong prologue - in which we see how gold digger Jack McCann [Gene Hackman] literally discovers a gold mine in 1925 - the film collapses considerably and it takes a while before the film gets going again. Hackman and Rutger Hauer - as Jack's daughter Tracy [Russell]'s fiancee - are excellent and it's a rare opportunity to see Joe Pesci and Mickey Rourke at work before they were typecast. There's an overabundance of sex and one truly extremely violent murder, but the courtroom finale is a somewhat tame and disappointing end to an intriguing if unbalanced thriller. The cinematography in this film by Nicholas Roeg is - as you might expect - excellent and often eye-catching.

Despite the star cast, I couldn't do much with this film. Hackman, Hauer, Pesci, Rourke... Something good had to come out of this, I think. Nice cinematography but what a bad story. In the 1920s, Jack finds gold in the Yukon, then time jumps to the 1940s on his Caribbean estate. His life has not exactly been one of happiness. His soul is held hostage by his greed and he sees in everyone including his own son-in-law-to-be (Rutger Hauer) a band of vultures out to get his fortune. Some mafia figures also show up... The film becomes quite grim and dark due to the depraved and rotten characters around Jack.

Roeg is certainly not my favorite director. His symbolism is annoying and intrusive and that is also reflected in cheap and useless scenes such as a voodoo scene and inappropriate shock value. Roeg certainly didn't need two hours for what he had to say. Not a high score for this stinker.
