Venice, 1900. Fenella MacLean is engaged to the composer Caryl Dubrok. She learns that Gemma, an unmarried woman, is staying with her child with a composer named Dubrok. Fenella breaks off the engagement with Caryl and leaves for the mountains. There she meets Sebastian Dubrok and she is soon intrigued by him, but she does not know that he is the composer where Gemma is staying. When Fenella is informed of this, Gemma demands that she choose between Caryl and Sebastian, but she cannot. Gemma and Sebastian leave for England to get married. Caryl and Fenella meet again and get engaged again. However, Fenella finds out that she is still in love with Sebastian.
