Equals plot

"Find your equal."

Silas (Hoult) lives in a future society called The Collective, which is home to a new breed of people called Equals. They are peaceful, calm, honest and polite. Life in The Collective is perfect: there is no poverty, greed, crime and no emotion. However, a new disease threatens to throw a spanner in the works. It activates everything the Equals thought they could escape: depression, sensitivity, fear and love. If Silas is also infected, he becomes an outsider, but there is one person who understands him. Nia (Stewart) has feelings, but manages to keep them hidden. When Silas confronts her, a strong bond develops between the two. They feel love and intimacy for the first time in their lives, but the only way to survive is to escape.

Good film in which two people fall in love with each other and are actually not allowed to. This film is set in a futuristic world in which human, emotional contact is out of the question. The first part is the best and focuses on how the emotions slowly set in for the main character. The second part focuses a little more on the plot. Tight and stylishly portrayed and Kristen Stewart and Nicholas Hoult are well cast.

The film often reminded me of Gattaca.

Small but fine sci-fi/romance. I didn't know this director yet. The soundtrack is strong and kept me glued to the screen almost hypnotized. Not much happens and yet... this was so different. I really liked the blue colors. It fits very well with the atmosphere and the cool, suppressing all those emotions.

Normally I don't like characters if they show few emotions, but the contrast becomes very strong because they do show emotions (although sometimes in a suppressed way). A clear sign of how good the acting actually is (especially Stewart). Doremus also proves that sometimes dialogues are simply superfluous and lets the sparks fly through simple glances and a less rigid attitude.

This film also shows once again how boring it would be without emotions, without friendship, without love and necessarily without children. Is this the future when human robots take over the world? Let me hope not. Pretty curious about other Doremus films, maybe try number 2 of his oeuvre at the weekend. There is no rush.

Very nice.

Was looking forward to it, after Zoe I had faith in the mix of romance and sci-fi that Doremus manages to pull out of his hat. And rightly so, as it turns out, although this film is just a bit more conceptual than Zoe. Certainly the vision of the future is one that may not be very realistic, but it is in function of the romantic story. As always in Doremus' films.

Visually it is a gem, but that is no surprise. The style that Doremus uses is not really that either, but it is very beautiful. I found the soundtrack even more impressive, especially because he sometimes makes less obvious choices.

Also very finely acted, nicely constructed and here and there are some interesting visions. Mix of genre and author that you don't see very often, all the more fun when it is developed in this way. As far as I'm concerned the best Doremus I've ever seen.

4.5* and a extended review
