Engel im Fegefeuer plot

The Ruhr in November 1918. 13-year-old Achim Wolters and his friends pick potatoes at the market. They want to surprise Achim's father, who is a stoker on a minesweeper and comes home for a holiday, with a meal. But the father does not come. He was betrayed by a spy at the station due to his left-wing attitude and was arrested. The priest tells this sad news to Achim and advises him to pray for his father's release. When the carpenter Stelzebein, on the other hand, emphasizes that one can only help oneself, the pious boy does not want to believe this at all. During his visit to the prison, Achim witnesses the brutality of the Imperial Police with his father and the other detainees. Now Achim is beginning to understand Stelzebein. Together with his friends, he follows the call of the incipient revolution and fights for freedom.
