A distant Jewish intellectual managed to stay out of the hands of the Nazis during WWII. Now, in 1942, he leads a double life in New York, where he is married to the woman who protected him during the war. In the meantime, he puts the spotlight on a saucy, married other woman. When his presumed dead first wife suddenly shows up, the problems pile up.
