After the death of close friend and Holocaust survivor Bessie [Rita Zohar], 94-year-old Eleanor [June Squibb] moves to Manhattan from the Bronx. For some incomprehensible reason, Eleanor's daughter [Jessica Hecht] enrolls her in a Holocaust survivor support group—Eleanor is a native American. Eleanor uses Bessie's life story to pose as a survivor, with all the predictable consequences. Your appreciation depends partly on whether you find Eleanor endearing and funny, or self-absorbed and irritating. Johansson, for one, quickly abandons subtlety and pulls out all the stops to induce tears. As a result, the second half, in particular, is hackneyed, overly sentimental, and ineffective.

A good film about an elderly woman who comes to live with her daughter after the death of her friend. Scarlett Johansson's directorial debut is a beautiful drama, with a nice dose of humor, especially in the first half. June Squibb is always a pleasure to watch, and she delivers another beautiful and outspoken character. A bit forced here and there, but the final section is touching.
