El Otro Barrio plot
El Otro Barrio is about roots, growing up and the functioning of the memory. About the vague awareness of this when you are only fifteen and about the influence that your environment, your family, your barrio - your neighborhood - will eventually exert. Ramón, from Vallecas, a working-class neighborhood in Madrid, is fifteen and already has a murder to his name. In a bizarre series of events, he hit his best friend in the carotid artery, after which his girlfriend fell from the balcony and the neighbor across the street was pushed down the stairs. Ramón is sent to a home for disadvantaged children pending the trial. His mother and older sister are convinced of his innocence, but can do little for him. Only Marcelo, a young lawyer and old family friend, can help him. For Marcelo, this means a reunion with the neighborhood in which he grew up, something he really doesn't want to think about anymore. In the home, the introverted Ramón is actually having a good time; he befriends his ailing roommate Anibal, reads A Brief History of Time and the relationship with his lawyer grows closer after a somewhat shaky start.
