El Bab el Maftuh plot

Laila is an outspoken, free-spirited student who constantly has to deal with patriarchal oppression in her life. At home she has her violent father. Her first love, Essem, subjects her to sexual violence and later there is the respected but conservative professor Dr. Fouad, her fiancé. Only the freedom fighter Hussain, a comrade of her brother Mahmoud, shares her ideals. Eventually she joins him in the national struggle.
