"In this country the truth is never known"
1897. On Mexico's Independence Day, a parade with General Porfirio Diaz rides through the capital. As Diaz passes, Arroyo picks up a rock from the ground and tries to get past a line of soldiers. Once at the president, he drops the stone but fails to deliver a blow with his fist. Just before a spectator wanted to stab Arroyo, he was arrested. From then on, the story describes the tangle of the political situation and the ensuing civil war. Stories of several characters from the time are discussed, including the writer Federico Gamboa, several officials of Don Porfirio's cabinet and the many victims of Mexican social life at the time.
