Ekkehard plot

The early Middle Ages; the 10th century. The monk Ekkehard lives in seclusion in the monastery of St. Gallen. Everything changes for him when the widowed Duchess Hadwiga appears and asks the intelligent monk a favor. She can convince the abbot to let Ekkehard work as a Latin teacher in her castle. Thus the young monk begins a new life and suddenly the young man, who has always lived in seclusion, is confronted with the medieval outside world: war, hatred, poverty and disease that affect daily life. Painful to him is that the Christian doctrine of salvation comes into conflict with the pagan elemental forces. The greatest challenge that awaits the young monk, however, is when he falls in love with the beautiful Countess Hadwiga herself...
