Late 1800s. With a Hazelip and crooked teeth, the little hairdresser Dällebach Kari (Hanspeter Müller), in Bern's capital of Switzerland, is a prominent personality. Born into a poor farming family, the doctor did not give him much chance of survival at birth. His barber shop is always busy. Not because Kari is better than the other hairdressers, but because he knows how to entertain his clients in a brilliant way that they don't mind waiting a few hours. But inside Kari is a broken man. 30 years ago he had to experience a bitter disappointment. At the age of 20, Kari met the beautiful Annemarie (Carla Juri). His luck seemed almost perfect, but Annemarie's parents had other plans for their daughter: A richer and more handsome husband.
