Dood van een Non plot
Sabine Arnauld was marked by an environment and upbringing that was strictly religious. After an accident, she is confined to a wheelchair. When Joris comes into her life, 'being a woman' awakens in her. She prays to God for a miracle and in return promises, after one year with Joris, to spend the rest of her life in a monastery cell. She is indeed healing, but on medical grounds. However, Sabine continues to believe in a miracle, but does not keep her promise: she marries Joris. Are the setbacks that follow a punishment from God? Sabine believes so and she enters the cloister where her sister Gertrude is already staying. When she experiences Gertrude's too far-reaching asceticism and the agony and absolute God-doubt, Sabine's faith is also shaken.
